ENG vs IND: Shubman Gill named India’s Player of the series in first assignment as captain

India skipper Shubman Gill was named India’s ‘Player of the Series’ after the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series ended in a 2-2 stalemate at The Oval in London on Monday.

Gill was the leading run scorer of the five-match series, finishing with a whopping 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40. He struck as many as four centuries in the series, and amassed 430 runs in a single match—the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Gill, who was picked for the honour by England head coach Brendon McCullum, said he was happy he was able to achieve the target he had set himself—to be the best batter in the series.

“… There were certain things I wanted to work on as a batter and it was a goal to end as the best batter of this series, glad to get that goal. It is always a combination of technique and mentality, when you are feeling good mentally then the technique naturally flows,” Gill said after receiving the award.

Meanwhile, Harry Brook was selected as England’s Player of the Series by India head coach Gautam Gambhir. Brook was England’s second-highest run-getter of the series, with 481 runs in nine innings. His counter-attacking 98-ball 111 in the second innings at The Oval put England on course for a series-clinching win, before the Indian bowlers fought back hard to level the rubber.
