Former Mumbai City FC manager Jorge Costa, the current sporting director of FC Porto, passed away on Tuesday afternoon at 53 due to a cardiac arrest, the club confirmed.
Known as the “Beast,” Costa led the Islanders in the Indian Super League for two seasons, between 2018 and 2020, finishing third and fifth in the league, respectively.
He played 383 matches with Porto, lifting the UEFA Cup in 2003, the Champions League in 2004, and eight league titles with the club.
He also made 50 appearances for the Portuguese national team, scoring two goals.
FC Porto “expresses its deepest sadness and consternation at the passing of an inescapable figure in the club’s history,” a club statement said.
“Throughout his life, both on and off the pitch, Jorge Costa embodied the values that define FC Porto: dedication, leadership, passion and an unshakeable spirit of conquest.
“Jorge Costa’s legacy will forever live on in the memory of all Porto fans. You will never be forgotten, Captain,” it added.
