Chelsea to donate FIFA Club World Cup bonus to Diogo Jota’s family

English Premier League club Chelsea will reportedly donate part of its FIFA World Cup bonus to the family of Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash last month.

Chelsea secured the title with a convincing 3-0 win over UEFA Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Earlier this year, the London club also claimed its first-ever UEFA Conference League crown.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea received an £11.4 million bonus pool to be divided equally among players who represented the club during the Club World Cup. Following internal discussions, it was decided that an equivalent payment would also be made to Diogo Jota’s family, bringing the total donation to about $500,000 (£368,184).

Born in Porto, Jota began his career in Paços de Ferreira’s youth setup before moving to Atlético Madrid in 2016. He later had a loan spell at Porto and a permanent move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

It was at Liverpool, however, that Jota enjoyed his most successful spell, winning the FA Cup and League Cup under manager Jurgen Klopp, and later lifting the Premier League title under Arne Slot in the 2024/25 season. In tribute, Liverpool “immortalised” his No. 20 jersey.
