Morocco narrowly beat Tanzania 1-0 in the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 quarterfinal on Friday at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
Oussama Lamlioui’s 65th minute strike was enough to help the two-time champion advance to the semifinals and knock out Tanzania — one of the co-hosts for this edition. Morocco lifted the title in 2018 and 2020.
Earlier in the day, Madagascar beat Kenya 4-3 on penalties in another last eight clash as it ended in a 1-1 stalemate after extra time.
Heriniaina Toky Bienvenu Randrianirina missed his spot kick in the penalty shootout but Kenya’s consecutive misses in its fourth and fifth attempt, through Alphonce Omija and Michael Evans Kibwage, meant Madagascar edged its opponent to make the last four.
In regulation time, Omija gave Kenya the lead soon after the half-time break before Fenohasina Gilles Razafimaro converted from the penalty spot to restore parity.
While Madagascar will face the winner of Sudan vs Algeria, Morocco will come up against the winner between Uganda and defending champion Senegal.
