FC Goa began its AFC Champions League 2 group stage campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Iraqi club Al-Zawraa SC at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa on Wednesday.
The Gaurs had some chances throughout the game, with players like Borja Herrera and Dejan Drazic creating opportunities, but they were unable to convert. Al Zawraa took the lead just before halftime, with striker Reziq Bani Hani scoring in the 44th minute. This goal gave the visitor a crucial boost of confidence heading into the break.

In the second half, it was all FC Goa as the home side attempted to find an equaliser, with players like Drazic and Brison Fernandes creating chances. However, they failed to take their chances.
The Iraqi side sealed its victory in stoppage time. Nizar Al-Rashdan scored the second goal for Al Zawraa in the 4th minute of stoppage-time, securing a 2-0 win.
While FC Goa showed moments of attacking promise, the visitor’s clinical finishing and solid defence proved to be the difference. This result puts FC Goa at the bottom of a tough group that also includes Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr FC, captained by Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Gaurs will need to regroup and focus on their upcoming away fixture against Tajikistan side FC Istiklol on October 1.
