New Zealand captain Sophie Devine says the White Ferns’ upcoming World Cup campaign represents a “change of guard,” with fresh talent stepping up alongside experienced heads in the squad.
Devine singled out youngsters Eden Carson and Izzy Gaze, who she said had “really stepped into their own,” while praising senior players like Maddy Green and Brooke Halliday for their contributions.
“This tournament will show the new blood on show in New Zealand as we look to clinch the title for the first time since 2000,” Devine said in her column for the ICC.
The White Ferns face a tough start against defending champion Australia, followed by challenges from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, all three formidable in sub-continent conditions.
To prepare, New Zealand held a training camp in India earlier this year to adjust to the conditions, while also focusing on fitness through the New Zealand winter.
“India’s always such a special place to play cricket, everyone knows how passionate the people are there about the game. Sri Lanka’s another great country to visit, it’s a vibrant place and we’ve really enjoyed playing there in the past,” Devine said.
The skipper added that the squad is eager to embrace the cultures of both host nations but remains clear on its goal: “We’re there to do a job, hopefully play some really good cricket, and win over a few fans.”
