England defended its Women’ EURO title after beat Spain in the final on penalties at St Jakob Park in Basel, Switzerland on Sunday.
This is England manager Sarina Wiegman’s third straight continental title after winning it twice with England (2025, 2022) and with the Netherlands in 2017.
Why was Beth Mead’s penalty retaken?
After the match ended 1-1 after extra time, the final headed into penalties to decide the winner. Beth Mead stepped up to take the first penalty and hit it into the back of the net whilst slipping.
However, the goal was disallowed after being checked by VAR as they saw that Mead had touched the ball twice as she slipped while shooting.
A similar thing happened to Julian Alvarez during the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 round of 16 match between Atletico and Real Madrid. At the time his goal was ruled out and he did not get a chance to retake it.
However, following the incident, a clarification was made by the FIFA-backed rules panel IFAB in June, stating that a penalty kick, which is scored after an accidental double touch, should be retaken.
A double-touch penalty that is not scored will not be retaken. In a shootout, such a penalty “is recorded as missed,” IFAB said, and during regulation time or extra time, a free kick can be awarded to the defending team.
